4 Ways Of Winter-Proofing Your Home

Though it has been one of the hottest summers in living memory, there have been the odd few colder days to remind us that autumn and winter will be here before we know it.

Before temperatures take a tumble you should check to see if your home is fully prepared for whatever winter may throw at it, including making sure that it is fully energy efficient. Now is the time to be doing it as there’s nothing pleasant about living in an icy cold house.

So that you don’t have to overly layer up and aren’t left shivering, implement these 4 fantastic winter-proofing tips…

  1. Install new windows and doors

Did you know that your existing windows and doors could be responsible for around 10% of the heat lost from your home? This will almost certainly be the case if they’re single glazed windows and doors.

Replacing them with double or triple glazed windows or doors will vastly reduce heat loss and significantly improve thermal efficiency; draughts will be a thing of the past. We develop our windows and doors in UPVC, aluminium, timber and a composite material, and they all offer exceptional thermal qualities.

  1. Service your boiler

When was the last time you had your boiler serviced? It should be done every year by a qualified engineer as a service is designed to identify any issues with the boiler. These issues can then be resolved whether it means fixing them or if needs be, investing in a replacement and more energy efficient boiler. This will minimise the possibility of a boiler breaking down at a particularly unfortunate time, such as in the middle of winter.

  1. Bleed your radiators

You need to check your radiators if an insufficient level of warmth is being generated indoors whenever your heating is on as it could be due to the presence of air bubbles in the radiators. When they’re filled with air bubbles it stops hot water being able to circulate around the radiator effectively, as you’ll notice when touching the radiator and feel both coldness and warmth. All you need to get the radiator functioning properly again is the radiator key to remove these air bubbles.

  1. Find a new energy supplier

We’re consistently being told of the importance of finding the best household energy package and switching energy supplier couldn’t be easier. Despite this advice, there are still thousands of households that have never switched supplier and they could be missing out on huge savings by remaining loyal to their existing supplier. Just input your current gas and electricity usage on a comparison site to find a better deal.
